Hello there,

Welcome to the February issue of The Workshop newsletter and Gosh! what a lot has happened since the last edition. As a lot of you may know Chrissy and I went skiing in January and she broke her leg on a black run on the first afternoon!

Ever the trooper she is still coming in to The Workshop to take her painting furniture classes each week. It's quite a sight to see her moving around the studio on her crutches while taking a class (I wonder if I should buy a parrot to go on her shoulder?)

Despite this setback we are both looking forward to the next couple of months as we have many new and exciting workshops lined up as well as our OPEN DAYS later in March which we hope you might like to come along to. More details later on

10 OUT OF 10!

Two of our recent new workshops have been held in the last couple of weeks. Firstly Nicky Johnson held a Valentines Day Cup Cake Decorating evening, and then last Saturday Heidi Jackson hosted a Rag Rugging full day workshop. From the feedback forms it's clear that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with every feedback form scoring them both the maximum score of 10 out of 10!

Suzanna Myers said of the Cup Cake Decorating evening, "The instruction was great and all of the tools made available were fantastic as well!" and Gill Humphries said of the Rag Rugging day, "Everything was fantastic! Heidi was so friendly, knowledgeable and encouraging. Even someone with limited craft skills could enjoy this class."

After comments like that we had little option other than to immediately put both workshops on again! The Cup Cake Decorating will be in April and this will be followed by the Rag Rugging in May. Click on the headings here (or go to the website) for all the details of each. We are already taking bookings for both workshops so don't leave it too long {subtag:name|part:first|ucfirst} if you want to come along!

COMMUNITY NEWS

Very best wishes to Carol Aconley for her recent operation. It was lovely to see Patsy Huddy back at the Upholstery clases at The Workshop. Congratulations from us all to both Susan Cairns and to Kate Boyes for the recent arrival of new grandchildren

We're sorry to be losing Colin Pearson and his wife Lesley (who attend the painting furniture and upholstery classes respectively) as they are going to live in Lancashire. We all wish them the very best in their new venture (Colin - who's going to wander into the office and talk footy with me when you've gone?!)

Here's one of Colin's latest finished items - another great improvised piece of furniture for his grandson Evan, who is fascinated by dinosaurs! Colin and Chrissy found a great T-Rex figure that they then made a stencil of, and then Colin used it to adorn the top of this bedside cabinet. Result? - one very satisfied grandchild!

SUITS YOU, SIR!

This is Richard, local solicitor and all-round good egg, who comes to Gillian's Art classes. I asked him recently what made him decide to attend these classes. "I'd always wanted to do watercolours but never really got to grips with it," he told me, "I went along to a course in Cornwall some years ago but didn't really get much out of it, and had been looking around for a class locally. A friend recommended The Workshop to me so I thought I'd give it another go. I've never regretted it."

"I really enjoy the place. There's good camaraderie here, it's a great crowd of people. The studio has a really nice atmosphere - it's very light and airy." What makes him keep coming along to these Art classes? I asked him, "Basically I just find it's very therapeutic." he replied, "When I'm here everything else just gets put out of my mind and there's no pressure on me at all. It's very relaxing!" As a busy solicitor he says these are the best two hours of his week

If you fancy a couple of stress-free hours to let your artistic imagination run riot, call us on 01723 859060 to book a slot. Wednesdays are our 'Art Day' with Gillian taking both a morning (10am to noon) and an afternoon (2pm to 4pm) class. Places are currently available in both

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

We've got the following workshops coming up in the next three weeks:

March 14th - Willow Weaving (Rustic Hanging Basket) evening 2 hours; March 19th - Roman Blinds all day workshop: March 19th - Willow Weaving (Bumblebees, Dragonflies and Butterflies) all day workshop. Details of all three are on the website www.the-workshop.info where you can book online or just ring 01723 859060 to book your place

OPEN DAYS

Just enough space left to tell you about our OPEN DAYS which are going to be on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th March, 11am to 6pm both days. We're going to have most of the tutors here to talk to visitors and describe the various classes we run each week as well as some of the new workshops that are coming up over the next few months

Refreshments will be provided and it would be lovely to see you - please feel free to mention this to any friends or work colleagues you think might enjoy a trip out here to have a look round

For those of you who haven't yet been to us before, this is a photo of The Workshop from Main Street, just 200 metres down from the main A170 Scarborough-Pickering road. There's plenty of parking in our main courtyard. If it's a sunny that weekend as it is in this photo, what better way of spending a relaxing hour or two than having a relaxing cuppa and a scone whilst looking round our studios and planning ways for you to be inspired!

Chrissy's Tip of the Day

When washing brushes out in white spirits, keep the used white spirit in a jam jar for a couple of weeks until all the paint residue settles to the bottom, thus leaving clean, and clear, white spirit on the top which can be then used again or poured back into the main white spirit bottle

Ian's Tip of the Day

When you've been out to the mere to collect frog spawn this spring (we never grow tired of doing this, do we?) don't rush home and drop them in the first jam jar you see on the side in the kitchen. BIG mistake!

Hello there!

... and welcome to the March edition of The Workshop's newsletter. As we see Chrissy modelling a cheeky little French number I picked up for her at the hospital pharmacy in Montgenevre, she has asked me to pass on a huge thanks to all those who have sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery

Chrissy's said to me the extra time that she's now got as she recovers has given her time to reflect on the four years it's been since opening The Workshop. A lot has happened over that time but, as she says, it couldn't have done so without your continued assistance and support in coming along to the classes

Equally the venture is underpinned by the remarkable skill and dedication of the team of tutors that provide these classes and workshops. In the early days it was just Chrissy and Ali who put on the painting, upholstery and soft furnishings classes, and they were joined a year or so later by Emma, doing painting and mosaics

As the workshop has grown, and expanded downstairs to 2 studios, the number and variety of other people coming on board has brought more interest and possibilities for our clients. This year we have added four completely new workshops with cup cake decorating, rag rugging, flower arranging and candle making to our range and hope to introduce more very soon

Chrissy says, "The success of this whole venture is down to a lot of hard work by many people, but couldn't have even got off the ground but for some exceptional help from one special person to whom I am eternally grateful. To mark our 4th anniversary we are holding open days on 25th and 26th March (11am to 6pm) and hope to see as many of you as possible. Please feel free to invite as many friends and colleagues along as well - they will all be most welcome! There will be demonstrations all day plus complimentary refreshments and teas and coffees provided - although seeing the article further down from my wayward husband, I shall make sure he's not in charge of the drinks!"

MOTHER'S DAY IDEAS

We have arranged for four varied and exciting new workshops that are ideal for that special Mother's Day gift. Treat her to some special 'me' time this year

Full details of each of these are on the website and you can either book online or phone us on 01723 859060. Alternatively you could even buy her one of our Gift Vouchers and let her choose which she'd like to do!

COMMUNITY NEWS

We send our very best wishes to Ruth Breakell and Susan Cairns and hope to see you both soon, and to Mary Mortimer - we're thinking of you and hope all goes well

Anna Hall, whose family supply us with the fabulous free range eggs we have on sale at The Workshop, is exhibiting some projects she has done both here and at home

Anna's farming background has a big influence on her work and quite a few of her milk churns will be on show at The Ryedale Youth Art Project organised by Joy D'alquen which takes place at the Memorial Hall in Pickering on 2nd and 3rd April. We are very proud of Anna and her creative progress - keep up the good work!

MAN'S BEAST FIEND

With the open days coming up I have once again been pounding the streets delivering postcards through people's letterboxes, inviting them along to the event

One thing that always gets me nervous when doing this is seeing the sign "Beware of the Dog". Having been bitten very badly when I was a nipper, I am always of a slightly nervous disposition when in the vicinity of man's best friend

However, today I saw a new sign: "Dogs Running Free!" Oh that's just great! As if I wasn't jittery enough. Not only are there now more than one dog, what's worse is they're all top class sprinters!

What's next? Signs proudly pronouncing: "Large, extremely fit and boistrous pack of dogs roaming free, not been fed for a week!!!"

Who'd be a postie, eh?

If you are looking for something a little different for the kids' party this year, why not let their imaginations run riot at a 'Pulp Collage' Party?

Niki Hampson, who has run a number of paper making workshops here at Ebberston, and has her own 'Pulpitations' studios in Dalby Forest, has come up with a great new idea for kid's parties, with this paper pulp collage theme

Children would have two hours to play with the paper pulps and produce their very own picture, which can then be finished off with beads, buttons or anything else that comes to hand. Finished pictures could be put into frames and kept for posterity!

These picture on the left were taken of some of the pictures done by 10 and 11 year olds at one of the recent pulp collage parties that Niki hosted, but this is a suitable activity for any age. The children will have a great time with the look, the feel and the creativity of producing their own individual picture from paper pulps

If you are interested in doing this for your children and their friends this year just give us a call on 01723 859060 and we'll arrange a suitable time and date to fit in with you

GOOD THINGS COME IN LITTLE BOXES

It's not just furniture that people take on as a project in our painting furniture classes. Carol Wray, who comes on Thursday morning's to Emma's class, has spent a few weeks painting a complete set of gift boxes for her grandchildren

Grandsons Finley and Alex each had one with a lighthouse on it, Molly's was decorated with butterflies, Erin's had dancing mice and musical notes and Niamh's was covered in glittering stars. As Carol said later, "These gifts went down a treat! The grandchildren all love them and keep all their little nick knacks in them!"

OH NO, NOT AGAIN!!

OK, hands up those of you who have rushed into the kitchen to get the teas and coffees on and accidentally put the kettle on the hob and lit it?

So it's just me then? Oh, come on!!

Needless to say Chrissy won't let me make the drinks for the class anymore!

Chrissy's Tip of the Day

When using paint - of any kind - always decant an amount into another container to use for the painting, keeping the rim of the original paint tin clean. This allows you to re-seal the tin properly, allows easy re-opening later, and prevents a thick skin forming on the paint, saving you money in the long run

Ian's Tip of the Day

Dog repellent - there's a special offer on at B&Q - I've bought a 25 litre can! As Henry Cooper used to say during the Brut adverts, "Splash it on all over!"
